On a recent visit to the Jewish Agency's Mevasseret Zion Absorption Center, Ms. Carol Levin of the UJA-Federation of NY, her sister and three friends came face to face with Ethiopian aliyah, culture and integration into Israel, experiencing the impact of our partnership.
Upon their arrival, the guests were welcomed by Yeshi, an Ethiopian immigrant who came to Israel three years ago. Yeshi led the women through the traditional boonah ceremony, which is an integral part of Ethiopian social and cultural life. Carol and her friends enjoyed home-made Ethiopian coffee and bread while listening to Yeshi recount her family's journey to Israel. Yeshi described the particular challenges facing her ten year old son, who is confined to a wheelchair, and the healthcare services and assistance he receives from the absorption center and from Israeli healthcare that ensure that he too is a successful new Israeli citizen.
Following their discussion, Carol and friends learned more about the Jewish Agency's Yesodot educational program for Ethiopian children that help bolster their academic and personal advancement through Hebrew language ulpanim and enrichment programs. The guests also visited a kindergarten on-site at Mevasseret Absorption Center where the kindergarten teacher and her students proudly presented Carol with the book, 'Transformations,' describing the success story of many Ethiopian immigrants to Israel.
Their visit was especially noteworthy considering Carol Levin and her daughter, Abby, were recently honored by the UJA-Federation of NY Women’s Philanthropy for their roles as leaders and trailblazers. Carol has dedicated many years to serving in leadership roles in the UJA-Federation of NY, coupled with her steadfast support of Israel, the Jewish Agency is proud to welcome Carol and her family and friends as partners in our efforts to strengthen Israel.
