Ethiopian Immigrants Become Bar and Bat Mitzot in Moving Celebrations

Bat Mitzvah girls proudly display their certificates officially marking their
entrance to Jewish adulthood.

December 7, 2009 / 20 Kislev 5770

Seventeen young men and women from Ethiopia recently celebrated their Bar and Bat Mitzvot in Israel. On November 9, 2009, the Bar Mitzvah boys were called to the Torah in one of the city’s synagogues, and that night a festive celebration was held in a local banquet hall. The immigrant children treated their guests to singing and dancing performances, prepared beautifully designed albums, and received gifts from the mayor of Nahariya and the organizers of the event – the Tziyona Organization in France. The celebration was sponsored by the Nahariya municipality.

Later, the Bar and Bat Mitzvah youth and their families celebrated in Jerusalem, thanks to the support of the Jewish Agency's Tapuz Absorption Center in Nahariya. The families walked along the Tower of David walkway and visited the Temple Institute where they took part in preparing incense. The highlight of the trip, of course, was being called to the Torah at the Western Wall.
