Location One of the oldest cities in Israel and the largest in the southern Negev desert region, Beer Sheva serves as the region's administrative, educational and health center. It is located on the main route from the center and north of the country to Eilat, in the far south and boasts 200,000 residents with 600,000 in the greater metropolis. It is known for its high percentage of young residents and large student population. It houses the Ben Gurion University of the Negev, in addition to other colleges and educational institutes and the Soroka University Medical Center. In the 1990’s, Beer Sheva saw a huge influx of Aliyah from the F.S.U which led to the building of new neighborhoods and the development of services. Today the city has new and veteran immigrants from throughout the world, and assists in integrating them in all aspects of city life.
Accommodation The 156 housing units at the Yeelim Absorption Center include 2-3 bedroom apartments, with a kitchenette, bathroom and small dining area. Each apartment includes basic furniture: refrigerator, stove, bathroom and shower, beds, table and chairs. Immigrants must bring their own kitchen utensils and bedding. Central heating and hot water (small electric boilers for each apartment) are provided, residents pay for gas, electricity and water according to use*. Services for the residents include a laundry room. Independent connections to television, cables and internet are available, at the oleh's expense. The Center is situated in a pleasant, young neighborhood and has a local shopping center nearby with a bank, post office, pharmacy, grocery store and bakery.
*Cost for gas, electricity and water is included in the rental fees for young adults on student programs or those receiving Student Authority assistance. |
