Initial Ulpan
Ulpan Aleph is the term given to the intensive, initial Ulpan to which all new Olim are entitled within the first year of Aliyah.

Classes are usually taught on several levels; at the beginning of studies, students are given a placement test to determine their level. In most cases, those planning Aliyah are advised to begin Hebrew study even before coming to Israel, in order to begin on a more advanced level.

Studies usually take place 5 days a week between 8:00 AM and 1:00 PM. The evening program usually runs between 4:30 PM and 8:00 PM. The full course is 25 hours a week, but may vary from Ulpan to Ulpan.

Ulpan Aleph classes are often held in Aliyah absorption centers but are open to all Olim, whether or not they reside in the absorption center during the course of study. Ulpan Aleph is offered free of charge for new Olim, and lasts for five months.

Check with your Aliyah Shaliach for more details. Keep in mind that all arrangements for residence in an Aliyah absorption center must be made prior to Aliyah through your Shaliach.
