Consortium Communities Allocate More than $790,000 in Emergency Funds to Western Galilee

When the Federation undertook the Emergency Terror-Relief Campaign for Israel last year, the Board of Directors expressed deep concern for our Partnership 2000 friends and recommended that 20 percent of the funds collected in this special fund drive be earmarked for terror-relief projects in the Western Galilee. Taking the initiative, Steve Shapiro, Louisville's Partnership 2000 chair, brought the Federation's commitment to the other consortium members and encouraged them to follow suit.

As a result, the Partnership communities raised $793,761 for the Western Galilee, and in mid-December, they met in Dallas to allocate the money. The ad hoc allocation's committee allocated over $790,000 for emergency programs in the Western Galilee.

Based on Louisville's recommendations, the committee spread the dollars over a number of different areas. In addition, all the other participating communities felt funding the Nahariyah Hospital was extremely important so Louisville's delegation went along with their recommendations.

Here is a breakdown of the programs and the dollars allocated.

* Central Control and surveillance equipment: $20,000
* Internal Radio Communication System: $3,000
* Student Stipends for security Guarding: 30 students for 2002/2003 $30,000
* Student Stipends for security Guarding: 50 students for 2003/2004 $50,000
Total Consortium allocation to Western Galilee College: $103,000

* Upgrading 20 Shelters $_26,000
* Equipment for bomb shelters $_11,200
* Stress Release Workshop $_11,840
Total Consortium allocation to the Matte Asher Regional Council: $154,690

Akko:
* Vehicle for community Policing: $_32,500
Plus direct allocation from Dayton $_32,500
* Buildings rental, equipment and implementation costs for community police outpost: $_44,500
* Enrichment workshops for youths ("Playing it Safe") $_31,000
* JDC - Pele - Enrichment Program for Junior High $_50,000
Total Consortium allocation to Akko: $158,000

Western Galilee Medical (Nahariyah) Center:
* SAT Scan and Mobile Radiology Lab $240,000
Total Consortium allocation to Western Galilee Medical Center: $240,000

The total amount allocated at this time is $655,690.

A total of $138,071 remains to be allocated, and the Consortium communities have asked our representatives in Israel to look at several programs developed by schools in the region. Once that input arrives, the committee will allocate the balance of the funds.
