World War I: Britain and her allies fight Germany and the Ottoman Empire.

Ahad Ha'am [Asher Ginsburg] and the Cultural Zionists join the Political Zionists in the search for a "charter" for the Jewish homeland.

1915

MacMahon-Hussein correspondence

Zion Mule Corps established by Yosef Trumpeldor in British Army.

1916

Sykes-Picot Agreement divides Middle East into spheres of British and French influence

1917

November 2: The Balfour Declaration

December: British Conquest of Palestine - General Allenby enters Jerusalem.

1918

Britain appoints Zionist Commission from within the Zionist leadership, to advise them on implementation of Balfour Declaration.

1918-19

Weizmann-Feisal understanding

1919

Chaim Weizmann heads Zionist delegation at the Versailles Peace Conference. Treaty of Versailles is signed.

1920

Fall of Tel Hai to Arab attackers, death of Yosef Trumpeldor.

British awarded Mandate over Palestine; Sir Herbert Samuel appointed High Commissioner.

Histadrut and Haganah founded.




1919-1923

The Third Aliyah begins, mainly from Russia.

1921

Jaffa riots - Yosef Chaim Brenner killed during the violence.
